Building a Community Around Wine

Fermented is a wine boutique who specializes in carrying organic wines harvested by smaller, family-owned producers who take tender care in every aspect of their business. Their mission is to make friends one bottle at a time by loving people and breaking down the barriers to discovering great wines.

FERMENTED WINE BOUTIQUE

Birthing a dream

Co-owners Benj Miller and Adam Danielson approached me to complete their very unique space with custom chalk drawings describing the artisanal process of making wine. We chose to use antique equipment to allude to the traditional and customized process used by families for generations around the world. Adam’s passion is shown in every detail of his store, from the store design to his inventory of wines to his conversations with customers.

Starting on paper first

In the weeks I waited for construction, I planned and sketched what would go on the 24 foot long by 4 foot high murals, since there were two. How do we communicate the artisanal approach to making wine? What story would we tell? What imagery would we use? What would be the best use of the space?

Is your palette traditional or modern?

One of the ways Danielson likes to figure out a customer’s flavor profile is to test wines by a traditional or modern palette. The wines in the shop are then labeled on a scale of how modern or traditional they are in order for customers to better determine which wine to purchase. Below shows the custom “labels” to complement his technique.
